Pre-Paint

I present to you RAG AND ROAST. Not so much live and in colour, but he'll sit to be painted another day.

Rag and whaaaat?

Not quite Roast yet.. but here he is chilling out in the oven! Made sure to keep the windows open, so we don't stink up the place. The box says 15 mins, but we'll check on him in 10.

The moulding of a monster..

Took a break to take some pics. Here's what I've got so far! Definetely coming along after about an hour.

And after another hour,

This dude would be so much meaner with a weapon and a helmet... will post final pics before baking next!

Frame and Foundation

Have about two weeks to vacate part of my basement apartment as their is another tenant moving in! Was digging through some junk and found a door stopper kicking around. It occured to me that it would make the perfect foundation for the mould. Since the door stopper is made out of a coil I just took another piece of hangar, bent it in shape and slid it between the coils, which made the support for two arms.

With the foundation of the mould now decided I just need to find some wood, trim it down and drill a hole.

Voila,

Clay Man...

So, this is the first opportunity I've had playing with Super Sculpey. I'm also not much of a gamer, but I thought it'd be cool to make a World of Warcraft Boss. Went to Karn who is very familiar with WOW and had him suggest a few characters. This is who I chose.. his name is Ragnaros, but I think I'll call mine Rag and Roast.

ON STRIKE

Everyone has been working so hard, back2back projects, all nighters almost everyday. I'm going on strike. Not from school or else I'd fail, but from stressing out. We have about three/four weeks left. I am going on strike from stress because it is only going to get into my way.

Good luck on the last few weeks everyone!

props to Will for the pic

Texture Assignment (pt.2)

Here are a few pictures I've found from several sources, which really capture the emotions of decay, elegance, forgotten and peace. Then for my final composition a theme again of forgotten.

decay --- sortov how I feel after starring at this screen for too long!:

elegance - simple, suede, style:

forgotten - dark, solitude, unvisited, lost space:

peace - space, calm, relaxed:

Texture Assignment (pt.1)

Over the last few days I have realized how much we take texture for granted. Everywhere we go texture forms the world we live in and gives detail and character to our surroundings.

Andrew asked us to illustrate our idea of soft, rough, pitted, woven, crinkled, smooth and hard. Here are my sketches:

More like one brick at a time...

In creating my desired brick pattern I first needed to create a basic brick sample which I can then turn into a pattern to fill any shape. So after layouting the bricks and making some tweaks in photoshop I turned this simple graphic into a realistic brick building.

One stone at a time..

Started to lay the foundation for my building but I am not getting the feel I expected. Will mentioned I should change the perspective of the building (see the building on the right). I think he's right it should give a sense of balance to the design.

I also dont like the type of building I used. For a skater the building should have more of a street feel. I found a tutorial on making a brick pattern in photoshop. I'll give it a try and see what I can create.

Sk8 Dude...

So, I used the photo in the previous post to trace over. I traced each part of the character on a different layer (the hat, the headphones, the pants, the shoes, etc...). Once everything was traced I went back to apply colours and different effects! His teeth could use a little work, but so far so good. Now that I have my character almost done I am going to start working on a bulding for him to stand on.

So we're back from reading week back to business as usual and ready to dive into the latest project Andrew has up his sleeve. Did a quick search on skateboard decks and found a site where you can design our own. I suggest everyone try it out, you never know what you could create just with a few images.

...

BEFORE AFTER
A quick photochop to illustrate how much I've learnt about Photoshop, Illustrator and print in the last two weeks.

Okay, okay, without further ado.. heres the final for my brochure!

Got the transparent pages on the top and the card stock printed pages on the bottom. Not the best pics because I didn't want to slow down the blog. Just click on any images on the site to get a better quality. As for the brochure now we just gotta put it together!

I'll have some pics of the final product tomorrow!

Back from the Board

So we've had Andrew's and Joe's last class before the big projects due. Didn't cover to much in either class, so it gave us time to work on our designs. I somehow want to incorporate the two of those images. I know its a pretty simple handmade piece, but something about a checkerboard.. or that pattern of lines.. that resesembles a staircase, I could use as a comparison.

The Drawing Board

Alright, so this deadlines sneaking up on me. It's time to get some things on paper. Let's see.. so far I've learned that these Adobe app's are all about layers. So with that in mind I think I want to have transparent pages in my brochure that layer. Hmmm...

I headed to Staples and see if this ideas even possible. To my luck I found the perfect transparent paper that goes with inkjet printers. I am sure it'll do.

I should also start my handmade background. I am pretty sure I'll go with pencil crayons for the medium. I'll keep that on my things to do in Andrew's class on Monday.

Help... please? pleasssseee?

Got a blade.. decided to take the wheel off and stare at a blank screen. I know any second now a great idea will come to my head... waiting... okay maybe I need to go learn how to use this Adobe Illustrator everyones talking about!

Okay, so I called Will... for all of you who don't know little Willy let me introduce you:

Here he is installing some useful software on my machine that we're going to leave unamed due to legalities.

Ended up spending all of last Thursday at his place learning illustrator! Learnt so much I took Joseph with me again on Saturday. Learnt how to make a wheel. Got to discuss some ideas. Also took some great shots of the blades!

Looks like he started me off in the right direction!

Managed to set aside time before class this morning to try that Sport Chek by Hillcrest Mall. I found a nice pair of Salomon inlines and thought some pictures in the store won't do. I decided to just purchase the inlines and return them a few weeks down the road. I know, I know I'll refrain from grinding down staircases, I need to get these back in MINT condition. ;)

Thought I should check out Sporting Life for some inline skates today. Gave Gabe, Blag and Maksim a call on the way there. Looked like everyone of us was serious about getting our research done quickly. The problem was Sporting Life didn't have any high end inlines. Infact, Sport Chek at Yorkdale Mall didn't have any much of a selection either.

We spoke to a few sales representatives and it looks like they are just out of season and replaced by the ice skates. One sales rep at Yorkdale mentioned Sport Chek at Hillcrest Mall has a few Salomon blades available between $150-$300.

So, I guess it wasn't a complete failure of a day, chilled out with some cool cats.

Getting started...

Whoa, whoa, whoa... inline skate project? But.. but.. I'm still trying to figure out how to use the pen tool :S This is going to be fun..

Well from what experience I have in that market I figure Sporting Life will probably be a good place to start. I love snowboarding and the boots I bought a few Winter's ago had a book similar to the one we are to design. I'll probably check it out soon.

Already October...

So it's October 1st, 2006. Just finished the first month of school and we're starting to get our hands dirty.

Thought I'd take something from our very first shape assignment and digi-fy it.

Check it out:

Sketched out the front end using the headlights as my circles. Took a pic inversed it and added some detail.

Fishin' for ideas...

Thought I'd unwind after the first couple of weeks of school and head out to the Bass ponds in Vaughn.

Spent a good 6-7 hours relaxing on the shores fishing it out with a couple of buddies. Finally a chance to relax and open my mind to some ideas of what I'd like to create in the next couple years.

Only caught two fish, but still smiling!
